EMDR Intensive Therapy

Unlock Healing with EMDR Intensive Therapy

Do you feel stuck in your healing process despite previous therapy?  Do you want to focus deeply on healing a specific event that continues to cause distress? Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) has emerged as a transformative approach, particularly in addressing trauma and related mental health challenges. EMDR Intensive Therapy takes this method a step further, offering a concentrated and powerful healing experience.

Why Choose an EMDR Intensive?

Traditional weekly therapy can feel slow and drawn out, especially for clients who are ready for relief now. EMDR Intensives offer a powerful alternative by creating a space where healing is the priority for a dedicated window of time. Benefits of this format include:

  • Accelerated progress: What might take several months in weekly therapy can often be accomplished in a matter of days or a few weeks.
  • Decreased symptoms sooner: Clients often report a faster reduction in trauma-related symptoms, such as anxiety, hypervigilance, and intrusive thoughts.
  • Less disruption to daily life: Fewer overall sessions mean less time away from work, caregiving, or other responsibilities.
  • Increased containment and support: Intensives are thoughtfully structured to ensure the safety and integration of the healing work.
  • Not restricted by Location: You do not need to live in Wichita, KS, to participate in EMDR Intensive Therapy.  Intensives are conducted in the office which is centrally located in downtown Wichita.
  • Tailored to Individual Needs:  Although the preferred treatment for intensive is 5 hours a day x 3 consecutive days, we can tailor your treatment based on your individual needs.

The Essence of Intensive Therapy

While traditional EMDR therapy is typically conducted weekly, EMDR Intensive Therapy compresses the treatment into a more condensed timeframe. This approach involves longer and more frequent sessions, often spanning multiple consecutive days. Intensive theapy is designed to provide a concentrated and immersive experience, allowing individuals to delve deeply into their healing journey.

Women who have experienced a disturbing or traumatic event often find EMDR Intensives to be empowering and transformative. We’ll start with a consultation to ensure the format is safe and supportive for your unique story.

The Goal of EMDR Intensive Therapy

The overall goal of EMDR Intensive Therapy is to help you feel better — to reduce the symptoms that are getting in the way of your daily life, and to help your brain and body fully process the event or experience that’s at the root of your distress.

We work together to target the original memory or event that’s causing ongoing pain in the present, whether that shows up as anxiety, panic, low self-esteem, emotional reactivity, or feeling stuck. Through EMDR, your nervous system has a chance to complete the healing process that was disrupted when the event happened.

You won’t forget what happened, but it won’t feel as overwhelming. You’ll be able to think about the past without reliving it and respond to current situations with more calm, confidence, and clarity.

What types of trauma can an EMDR Intensive help with?

EMDR Intensives are designed to address a wide range of traumatic or disturbing events, including:

  • Sexual violence
  • Witnessing or experiencing a violent attack
  • Medical trauma (miscarriage, life-threatening medical procedure)
  • Unexpected or sudden loss – including the loss of a child or partner
  • Divorce
  • Infidelity
  • Sudden Job Loss / Change
  • Car or airplane accidents
  • Natural disasters
  • Community violence
  • Combat / War
When is EMDR therapy not a good place to start?

Because EMDR Intensive Therapy is a focused and immersive approach, it can be emotionally and physically demanding. It’s common to experience strong emotions, memories, and body sensations during this deeper work, which is why careful assessment is essential.

There are certain situations where an intensive format might not be the best first step:

  • You’re currently navigating a major life stressor and don’t have much time, energy, or external support.
  • You’re dealing with significant physical health issues that cause fatigue or make long sessions difficult to tolerate.
  • You are in crisis, including experiencing thoughts of self-harm or suicide.* At this stage, your safety and stability are the priority. EMDR may be appropriate later, once crisis support and stabilization are in place.
  • You tend to dissociate intensely or frequently feel “checked out” during stress. In this case, some additional preparation or stabilization work may be needed before an intensive would be appropriate.
  • You’ve recently been hospitalized for psychiatric reasons. If you’ve had a recent inpatient stay, it’s important to allow time for continued stabilization and follow-up support before diving into intensive trauma work.

These situations don’t necessarily rule out EMDR Intensive Therapy altogether. They simply call for a thoughtful, supportive conversation to determine the right timing and create a plan that prioritizes your safety and readiness.

How is an EMDR Intensive different from regular weekly therapy?

Weekly therapy is often limited to 50–60 minutes and can take months to process trauma. EMDR Intensives involve extended sessions (3–6 hours/day), allowing for deeper, uninterrupted work in just a few days. It’s designed to accelerate relief and resolution.

Can I do an EMDR Intensive if I’ve never done EMDR before?

Yes. Many clients begin their EMDR journey through an intensive. You’ll receive thorough preparation and education before we begin reprocessing, along with regulation tools to support safety and grounding throughout.

What’s included in the EMDR Intensive?
  • 90-minute pre-intensive consultation
  • Personalized treatment planning
  • 3 days of extended EMDR sessions (5 hours/day)
  • Built-in breaks, grounding exercises, and body-based regulation
  • Aftercare plan with resources for integration
  • 30-minute follow-up via Zoom
Will I be emotionally overwhelmed after an intensive?

Sessions are structured to support emotional regulation. Grounding and containment practices are used throughout. Most clients leave feeling emotionally lighter, more connected, and relieved. You’ll also leave with personalized tools for ongoing support.

What if I need more support afterward?

You’re not alone. Many clients continue with follow-up therapy—weekly, biweekly, or monthly. We’ll discuss a tailored aftercare plan to support your ongoing growth and integration.

Do you offer virtual EMDR Intensives?

Yes. If you live in Kansas.  Virtual EMDR Intensives are available and effective, with proper preparation and pacing. You’ll be supported through each phase from the comfort of your home.
